    70 LT1, Option UA6 - Alarm system

lt option ua alarm system john fulton i recently purchased a low mileage survivor lt it has the ua i looked in the judging manual and it conforms to the description however the owner and in fact the previous owner had long since lost the key it's a briggs and straton lock so i can get most likely get another key from a locksmith but my question is more to operation of the system i assume you turn the key and its on i have noticed pressure plunger type switches on the doors and hood and can see the alarm horn in the drivers side rear wheel well i have the set of restorer articles for the on order but they are out at the moment and its back ordered any help or advice is appreciated

          Don't Everyone Laugh At Once

don't everyone laugh at once tom buddie legal liability and danger factors aside here's one for the record after my vette was stolen i purchased another installed the ungo box with siren and bosch starter cutout the ungo box also triggered a page alert with beeper and get this a volt fired tear gas cannister hidden behind the drivers seat yes this is a true story the tear gas cannister could only be triggered if the clutch was depressed and the alarm system had been triggered plus it was detachable so i could snap it in place only when absolutely necessary i felt pretty confident in my design if the siren was blasting i should be smart enough not to step on the clutch well the ungo box came unglued velcro fell down and shorted out while i was driving on rt in new jersey major highway no worry just drive home and turn off the siren when i stepped on the clutch to downshift for the exit ramp pssssssssssss i quickly pulled to the side ripped out the tear gas cannister which was spraying all over me and threw it out the window by this time i couldn't see too well so i grabbed a tissue from the rear of the car unfortunately the tear gas cannister had fired directly into the tissue box so i wiped my face with a super dose of tear gas by the time i got home my face looked like it had been hit with a baseball bat i had to laugh at myself and i exclaimed well it works okay you can stop laughing now

Re: Anecdote - An interesting thought

re anecdote an interesting thought carl rose this story brings up an interesting thought how to protect vintage corvettes against theft without altering original equipment of course for seldom driven cars parking in teh garage with another car behind or removing various bits of the ignition system are viable options here's my approach car i guess i'm not much of a believer in alarm systems in scaring away a professional thief and locking a convertible is only useful if they don't have a knife i installed a switch on the run wire to the coil to cut the ignition the car cranks but won't start i didn't cut any original wires used an existing firewall hole and clamped this under the passenger birdcage of course this will only slow someone down not prevent theft since it's only moved every two weeks perhaps i should remove igntion parts i do also use a club anyone have any thoughts carl p s it's not as bad as my old mustang heretical i know which doesn't even have a hood lock

re lt option ua alarm system craig jewett hi john i had purchased a ' lt coupe back in and it also came with the ua alarm system by i believe that gm had made it standard equipment as i recall the same oval key operated the door locks rear glove compartment spare tire lock and the alarm system key lock the alarm off position was at the o'clock position to turn the alarm on the key was turned to the o'clock position clockwise the alarm horn was a separate small horn tucked up behind the left rear wheel housing plunger switches were located at the rear of both door openings as opposed to the courtesy light switches located at the front of the door openings and under the hood on the right side sill area near the the wiper door vacuum diaphram the only item that required any sort of repair in the years that i owned the car was the actual key switch the alarm system is a straight forward circuit and easy to troubleshoot an interesting alarm story is that i remember leaving the lt parked in the driveway of my parent's house one long weekend and set the alarm on for some reason they came back before i did and when my dad went to move the car i trusted him with a key set the alarm sounded waking up the neighbourhood i guess i had neglected to tell him how to shut the alarm off fortunately he was a good electrical engineer and he was quickly able to zero in on the battery location and disconnected it i thought he was going to hang me out to dry when i arrived home good luck getting that alarm working and be sure to use it

re lt option ua alarm system terry mcmanmon you have received good information from craig jewett regarding the operation of the ua system only several things to mention if you are replacing the lock the easiest and least costly option if the key is missing i believe it is no longer available from gm but a good locksmith should be able to order it from briggs stratton the name of that company has now changed but the lock part of it is still in milwaukee and last time i checked several years ago they still stocked it there was a time when these were available from chicago corvette but their supply may have been exhausted if you need more data on getting a lock e mail me at above address craig is correct the door actuating pins are on the rear door jam there are contacts on each of those switches one for the door adjar and one for the ua cars without ua have only single contact pin switches in this position if you have problems with any of the pin switches note that the judging guide calls for the head of the switch to be marked sx replacement switches if you can find them usually lack this mark unless the switch has been physicly damaged as often happens when larger people get in and out of the car don't ask how i know a lack of positive connection can often be cured by careful cleaning of the contact surfaces the pin switches are self adjusting in that when fully extended the action of closing the door will automaticly adjust them al least that is the way they worked when they were new terry
