    C1 instrument housing questions

    Hi all,

2 questions regarding the C1 instrument housings:

    1. what kind of metal is the housing made of?
    2. what is the correct part # for the instrument housing for a '59?

    Thanks,

    Jim

      Re: Question #1... "Pot"...

Maybe I should be more clear on my question #1... Are the parts made from steel or aluminum?

      Thank you.

        Re: Question #1... "Pot"...

Dennis was being short and to the point. The cluster is made of pot metal. This type of diecast metal is an alloy of several types of metal, mainly zinc and aluminum. It's composition varies widely from part to part, and it is a bitch to weld. An experienced TIG welder can repair it or it can be smoetimes repaired with low temperature silver-bearing solder. A lot of the trim on a C1 id made of it including the grille teeth, tail lights, grille mouldings, emblems, ect. It is used mainly because of it's low melting point which makes it easy to diecast.
