    66 bb block engine numbers

I have put a deposit down on a 427 coupe. I am flying to new york tomorrow to inspect the car. I feel confident that I can inspect the car for overall condition, but am concerned about the pad on the block. I have seen pictures of this cars pad, and need to impose on the members to help me out.
The pop has TO628ILH plus the VIN
The pad looking down on it has TO628IL in the upper left, and on the lower right it reads: 126213 and is preceded by a number or letter I cannot read.
I am concerned about a restamp. Thanks as alway for your help!

Re: 66 bb block engine numbers

    Frank,

From my limited knowledge of 66's. I think everything is OK. The H on the POP stands for Holley, the carburetor used on that particular engine. The "T0628IL" on both the POP and engine stamp match, so that is OK. I don't know how much you know about what these digits stand for, but I'll note them anyway. "T" indicates Tonawanda, where the engine was assembled. "0628" indicates that the engine was assembled on June 28. "IL" is the engine type, in this case, a 390hp 427 with manual transmission. Your vin sequence "26213" appears to be an early July 66 build, so the engine with a date of June 28 is right around where it should be. As far as the letter you can't read on the engine stamp, it probably is an "S" which stands for St. Louis, where the entire car was assembled.

Now, unfortunately it may have all of those things right and still not be real.

How come everone (excluding me) wants a "registry" for their Corvettes but no one (including me) wants a registry for their guns?

              Guns vs. Corvettes

Yes, I have noticed that folks who like Corvettes also have gun collections. Actually, "anything collections" seems to go with Corvettes, or perhaps it's my generation. For example, we have too many 327 engines, says my wife.

However, I've stayed away from guns.

Registry? Guess I would avoid putting my car in such a list also. Now that I think about it, a registry does not make a fake big block any more real, does it? Guess I am really looking for those missing production records.

                Possible Explanations...

                (1) Gunowners, including some that own Corvettes, are smart enough to realize that if you furnish a public list with your name and address, people who want your guns (Corvettes), only have to go to your address and collect them.

                (2) Gunowners, including some that own Corvettes, are paranoid and mistrustful of people they don't know, believing that every man has his price, and some "men" are dirt cheap. The level of paranoia varies from individual to individual, but seems to be directly proportional to the number of times the person has been victimized.

                (3) All of the above.

Actually, I don't really collect guns. The ones that I have were acquired MANY years ago when I was marginally into such things. A few were acquired for functional reasons (I was a reserve police officer for several years). However, since I don't sell things, they all remain.
