    1971 LT-1 Tachometer

Can anyone tell me where the redline should be on a 1971 LT-1 Tachometer? I'm considering purchasing a car online and the picture of the tach has the redline at 6300. Does this seem correct for the car?

    Thanks,
    Mark

      Bob,

The yellow band starts at 6300 and goes to 7000. I can't quite see a red line. Does this sound correct for a 71 LT-1?

      Thanks,
      Mark

Tachometers for mechanical lifter engines going back to at least '63 carry the following color coding.

        Yellow zone: 6300-6500
        Red zone: 6500-7000

Fading can make the color change at 6500 hard to discern,

I'll leave it to owners of '71-'72 "low compression" LT-1s to confirm, but I thought I heard that the 9:1 compression LT-1s may have carried a lower redline tach than the 11:1 CR version of 1970.

            Duke / Paul,

Thank you very much. I looked closer at the picture and saw the yellow/red split at 6500 as you indicated. I sincerely appreciate the help.

This talk about tachs made me wonder- if the yellow line starts at 6300, and means you should watch out because you're about to hit the red line, and if go to the red line at 6500, haven't you now reached the point where you could blow the engine up? So what if you continue on to 6750? You could REALLY blow it up? And on to 7000- you could REALLY REALLY blow it up? Shouldn't it be a red point? Just wondering.........

Oh, Yeah, Dave, a Freudian slip

Radio is in and working. Speakers were bad, so the whole dash had to come out. 90% back together, so I will find out what I left un-hooked when I start it up.
