    BB Inspection needed

Recently I have recieved great support from the tech board on questions pertaining to a purchase of a 66 bb coupe that I am considering. The present owner is claiming originality and matching numbers. I have done my research and still have questions. While I have no reason to doubt him, for my sanity I would like to hire someone who can help me make this decision. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks Frank

    Frank,

You need to be careful who you hire as there are many people who claim to be experts and are nothing but someone wanting your money.

If you need someone to check your purchase post their name on this forum and ask for references. If they are known and trustworthy they will not mind having the members of NCRS to recommend them on this board.

Just my two cents to keep you from getting e-mail and hiring a bum.

    Regards,

    JR

I appreciate the feedback. This is so hard. There is such a wealth of knowledge and experience in the NCRS. I saw another post asking for help with an inspection. I am a "newbie" to this hobby. I really want to make the best informed decision that I can. My email is wf_clark@yahoo .com. If anyone has any feedback please contact me.
        Thanks,

          Frank,

Where are you and/or where is the car? That would help.

            Patrick is right

Post where you are and where the car is. Someone who can help in NY probably can't in California or in Montana. There are enough people here scattered around, you may have someone here close, but a "Can someone help" is like "what car should I buy" without telling what you are interested in or how much money you have or what you want to do.

              Mike,
Good points. Here is what I need. I have a deposit on a car on Long Island , New York. I am flying there on tuesday to look at this car. I have arranged to work with an inspecter from Auto Appraisal Group. AAG tells me that it could be hard to tell a good fake. I talked to Ray Morrison by email, and he said the samething. He and others have suggested that I try this forum to request help. One was trying to talk to someone who does judging. I want to be "that guy" who writes back in the future very happy with the car. My email is wf_clark@yahoo.com. One of the things that got got me churning was this: The pad has TO628IL on the upper left, the partial vin 126213 on the lower right of the pad is preeceded by a letter I think is S. I have Colvin's book on chevy numbers and if I am reading right, it says that for this year no number preceeds the partial vin. Should the pad have the S? There was an article in a past restorer or driveline on a guy who has two original BB 66 cars. The article had great pictures of both pads I cannot find my copy. For reference, I am trying to find pictures like this to compare with what I am looking at.
              Thanks,
              Frank

                Frank

If you still need help, go to metroli.com. that is the website of the NY Metro/Long Island Chapter. There you can find e-mail links to some of the guys. One that I know of is Vinny Peters who you can contact thru this board. Is this a private seller or a dealer? What town are you going to? I live about 1/2 way out on LI, if I can be any help with directions or such, let me know. I'm afraid I can't help much with inspections.

                  Re: Patrick is right

On Long Island you could try Kevin Mackay or Richard Prince. Is it legal to say both those names in the same sentence? I'm not sure if Richard does appraisals, but I'd trust those two long before I'd trust AAG. Just my additional $0.02 but I'd say you are wasting your money with AAG.

Contact the Long Island NCRS Chapter ASAP. They may even know of the car and/or be able to provide references for an appraiser/inspector who KNOWS Corvettes. I'll play the odds (having seen the typical any-car-make inspector at work) and tell you that the AAG guy will be looking at the same books you are in order to try an "authenticate" it for you. I'd be more than pleasantly surprised if I were incorrect.

                  Pessimistic today, aren't I?

                    Re: Patrick is right

I agree with Rich and Patrick on finding some of the local Corvette guys first.

While trying to find a picture of a few '66 engine pads, I ran across a small block F05I6HT. It has VIN 6122 ??? stamped in. I would believe it original as it is too rusted and old for someone to have faked it for selling. It does not have an S in front. HOWEVER, the first glance, the 6 looked like an S.

However, checking some '67 pads, I find 7116211 with no S. 7110027 has no S. In '65, 5120597 (sbc) has no S. Unfortunately, they are all small block. My luck on finding big blocks those years isn't doing too well.

1968 - 18S423408 has the 1, year, and S in front (bbc, IM). 18S410371 has the 1, year, and S (bbc, IL). 18S419?30 has the 1, year, and S (bbc, IT).

Since you have the VIN, you could contact Al Grenning and see if he could send you a few copies of pads close to it to compare.

                      Found one on ebay

but this rebuilder surfaced the numbers off. He will "broach" the pad for you so you can stamp your own numbers for only $450 extra.

One of his other engines was "broached" and it looked like someone used a 6 inch sander with 45 grit. You could even see the curve in the "broach".

Here is a '66 BBC conv on eBay.

You might write him and ask for a close up of the engine pad since his is so small on the auction.

Here is another that claims the numbers match. Ask for a close up of the engine pad.

                      Good luck.
