    Detailing/Cleaning underhood plastic

I have the engine out of the '69 and I'm working on detailing the engine bay. The plastic fenderwells and firewall are dirty and have rust amd antifreeze stains. Anyone have any advice on cleaning and detailing these items? I was thinking of tryine 1500# wet dry paper, but I was hoping for some other input.
    Thanks,
    Matt

saturate the firewall, frame and innerskits with gunk. let sit couple hours then power wash it.(if ya don't have a powerwasher, they can be rented.). then i'd spray it all with lacquer thinner(don't let any thinnner get on the exterior paint) and wipe it down with papertowels. repeated thinnner/towels till your to bare glass. then repaint those parts that were blacked out in st. louis. you'll be real pleased with the finished product. good luck, mike

And when you're ready to paint, use aluminum foil to wrap up those vacuum hoses and wires that you don't want paint on. Easy on, stays in place, and easy off.
