    Another C2 jacking question

    Members,
I spent an hour reading the archives about getting mid-years on and off of jack stands and really didn't get a concise answer.

It's clear - keep your garage jack off the cross member and use the jacking points that the General provided.

To achive this objective, it would seem that one needs two garage jacks. One for each side of the automobile (located under the jacking points). Guess one would have to go from side to side and raise/lower both jacks a little at a time to keep the car moving evenly.

Anyone got another solution or should I be looking for another jack on sale?

    Thanks gents,
    Gene

    Re: Another C2 jacking question

    Gene,

I don't know what others will have to say about this method but I have found it to be a safe and easy way to get the whole car off the ground. I use a floor jack with a hockey puck in the saddle and I position it at the outer frame rail where the center cross member meets the outer frame rail. I raise the whole side of the car and position two jack stands one each in the area of the usual jacking points on the side rail and lower the car onto the stands. Then I do the same on the other side of the car. Works for me.

      Re: Another C2 jacking question

      Wayne,
      Thank you for your reply.

I used the same procedure when I placed the car on casters to move it out away from the garage wall to begin my restoration. I wasn't comfortable with the stress it seems to introduce into the car.

It sure is tempting to place the jack under the cross member but I'm trying to turn over a new leaf and protect the car more. I'll soon be taking it down off the jack stands to get it to the engine rebuilder. I was hoping to get more input from the board.

What do you think of the idea of using two garage jacks and lifting one end at a time?

Thanks again for your reply, Wayne.

      Regards,
      Gene

        Use a large pad

The reason the front crossmember bends is the load is on a small point. If you spread it over a large area, the chances of bending are much less.

Get a 2x8 and cut it a foot long to use between the jack and the crossmember. And if you are still nervous, center the jack nearer the front or back where the load is more on the vertical sections rather in the unsupported center.

            Gene:

Get an old telephone book and put it between the jack pad and the engine cradle. Works fine, with no dents or scratches. BE SURE to use jack stands before getting under there.
