    cracked C3 fan blade

i am restoring my 69 and bead blasted the fan blade to find one of the blades had a crack about 50% of the width. since it is a dated original part can i have it welded? i know an expert welder, maybe he could TIG it and i could grind it down some so it wouldnt be out of balance. anyone done this before? i sure would hate to have half a blade get thrown thru my new radiator!!
    thanks, dick

Sounds a little spooky Dick....Most folks would start looking for a replacement.

As long as your friend is an expert, I would have him/her weld the crack from "both" sides to ensure full penetration. Dress down with a dotco to match the surface and it should be OK. A good weld is stronger than the substrate.

I speciaize in "gorilla welds" myself. They are strong but very ugly.

    good luck,
    tc

Dick, I would have serious reservations about welding a fan blade. One would be the balance issue and the other would be the strength of the weld and the base metal surrounding it. The blade not only rotates, but it also flexes as the speed increases. If your welder friend is a certified welder I would leave it up to his judgement. You have 35 year old aluminum which I am sure is somewhat fatigued already. If it were me I think that I would be searching the Driveline for another blade. A blade, at speed, can be very damaging to your car at the least. At the worst, lethal

If one blade has already fatigued enough to crack, the others are likely not far behind as they have led the exact same life. You can save the fan after it's welded, but I would buy a replacement for day to day use and only put the original on for parking the car at shows - kinda like original tires -who would really consider driving a car on 35 year old tires?
