    distributor detailing

Just finishing up the engine on my '69 350. The question I have is it supposed to be black or natural cast iron?

    Thanks,
    Matt

The part of the dist housing that is not inside the engine is painted black, with a possibility of some engine color overspray at the area next to the intake manifold.

      Matt,
The only references to finishes in the distributor section of the 68-69 TIM&JG are regarding the identification band (natural aluminum on the inside and red anodized on the outside) wrapped around the lower housing, and possible broadcast code dots (yellow, green, white, blue, or orange) located usually near the vacuum advance canister. Additionally, it states that the distributor hold down clamp and bolt is painted orange if the intake is orange, or natural if the intake is aluminum. No finish data is given for the distributor itself. My 68 K66 distributor has a natural finish.

Semi-gloss black. No engine over spray in 1969. Assuming by "350" you are referring to the horsepower, rather than engine size -- an orange dab near the vacuum canister is the color code for that engine.
The color codes are in the 1968-69 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide. If you want to do the car the way the factory did, this book will be your best investment.
