    54 powerglide

I am attempting to help disassemble a powerglide out of a 54 Corvette.

We are having difficulty removing the output shaft extension/adapter. We have removed the bolt in the center of the extension and it will not come off.

Does anyone have a diagram of that rear assembly, or instructions about how to take it apart.

We assume the extension must come off then the rear drum assembly will come out the front.

    Please help.

    Thank you,

    Verle

It should come off with a little hitting using a rubber mallet Did you remove the trans. rear housing ?( Then you must align the rear pump drive pin by turning the out put shaft to remove the rear planetary gear and out put after you remove the drive speedo gear.

Yes, we removed the tailshaft housing.

I know the tailshaft housing is a reproduction. The owner said he order the "tailshaft extension", a hollow shaft about 8 or 10 inches long, splined on the outside where the yoke engages. I believe this is also a reproduction. Inside the hollow shaft was a bolt which we removed.

The speedomoter gear appears to be installed on the smaller shaft that goes through the bearing to the rear clutch pack. The speedomoter gear looks like it will not come off over the rear shaft.

The hollow shaft will not budge. We are trying to avoid being destructive as the owner said the hollow shaft cost him 6 or 7 hundred dollars.

Roy, do you have a diagram from a Corvette shop manual that would show that rear assembly? The available manuals show 53 and 54 Chevrolet powerglide but not Corvette.

      Thank you,

      Verle

No I don't have a pic of the Corvette trans. but a car brake down is the same but for the out put shaft and housing. TRY heating it , cant hurt the trans in any way. Must only be stuck, a tight fit.
