the speedo does not and has not worked since i have owned , the speedo does move if adapter at the trans is pulled and manually spinning inner cable by hand the needle moves . if i stick my finger in the input hole i cannot feel the gear ,just the shaft . Can i remove the tailstock from the trans and fix the speedo problem or does the trans need to be removed? i supect the gear is on the shaft just maybe not clipped or? McGiver has been here. Re: 69 m21 speedo problem
I beleive in '69 the gear was still pressed onto the shaft. That pretty much makes it a pull the trans job. Pulling the Tailhousing with the trans in the car is an iffy proposition at best in any event.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 69 m21 speedo problem
Hi Kelly. I believe the gear in a '69 Muncie is plastic. If the retaining clip
wasn't installed right the gear will move and speedo will quit. I think the tranny has to come out to fix it. I made the same mistake recently when I rebuilt the Muncie in my '59. Bubba (also in Canada).- Top

Re: 69 m21 speedo problem
Hi Kelly,
If the gear is nylon:
It's a matter of pulling the tail stock housing and using a PVC pipe that will slide over the main shaft and tapping it into position. The closer the fit of the pipe over the shaft the better.
Correct positioning of the gear on the shaft on the first shot is key.
If the gear is steel:
On my 68 M-20 the drive gear on the main shaft is steel and a press fit.
On a rebuild video I have, one way of placing the gear back onto the main shaft was to heat it up with a bottle torch and quickly slide it in place.
The gear will turn a dull brown and will even blue a tad, but as there is no huge strain on the steel gear, losing the tempering isn't a big deal. Usually the nylon speedo cable drive gear will disintergrate first anyway (if the main shaft gear is steel).
If you pull the tail stock housing off the tranny, you should be able to perform this gear replacement without having to pull the tranny out of the car.
BUT be warned that you will need to have your ducks in a row so that you can slip the gear on right where you need it on the shaft shoulder the first shot as it will cool off quick.
The higher you can safely get the car in the air, the better too, as your going to need alot of elbow/wiggle room.
I'll venture that IF the gear is nylon, it's in the bottom of the case.
Hope this helps,

Re: 69 m21 speedo problem
kelley----
The speedometer DRIVE gear on all 68-70 Muncie transmissions is a nylon gear that is retained to the shaft by a special clip. Only 68-70 Muncies use this DRIVE gear configuration. If the gear has become dislodged or broken, it will be necessary to remove the transmission from the car to repair it. Once removed from the car, the extension housing needs to be removed from the transmission to access and repair the speedo gear. The good news is that no press is required to remove or install the gear; it can be done by hand quite easily. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
