    Antifreeze Shelf Life

Located a few gallons of Prestone "green" antifreeze, unopened, that have been in storage for at least eight years. Does the "green" have an estimated, or defined shelf life?

    Re: Antifreeze Shelf Life

Yes, conventional IAT antifreezes have a shelf life of no more than three years due to silicate drop out. You definitely don't want to use eight year old green stuff. Use Zerex G-05, which is an HOAT antifreeze. It is back compatible with IAT, but I recommend you do a thorough system flush to remove all traces of the green stuff. You can remove the heater inlet hose from the inlet manifold and flush both ways to purge the engine and heater core circuit.

If you don't understand the acronyms that define the three major types of antifreeze corrosion inhibitor packages, page down a few threads to another one on antifreeze where I defined them.
