    Tires

Does anyone have any tire recommendations for a street driven 67 roadster? I want something that will fit stock wheels and clear the fenders but offer better handling. I would appreciate anyones experience/advice

    Craig:

I've got a set of Coker Red Line Radials on my 67 Coupe. No problems with clearance on stock steel Rally's. Size is P205/75R15, Classic 3/8" Red Line. Ride well and stop well. $137.00 per tire.

Coker tires 1-800-251-6336. They are aware of what tires will fit your car w/out any problems. These tires I have have the name COKER on them not UniRoyal/Firestone etc.

205x75-15 Michelin narrow white wall. "Sams" for about $65 each. Half the price of Cokers but no red wall. Quality of ride and handling of Michelin tires is generally excellent. Quality of ride and handling of Cokers compared to Michelins -? But for half the price this is a no brainer UNLESS you NEED a red wall tire. Actually, I wanted a red wall tire given the same set of choices but the wallet separates the "wants" from the "needs" and the Michelin name separates the quality factors.

        real high perf. tires.

If you really want better handling, the only two choices are the GY Eagle GT+4 215/70R-15 H-rated, about $400 a set. The ultimate is the Michelin XWX, same size, V-rated from Coker Tire, the sole US distributor for Michelin vintage tires. They're about $1000 a set.

Your production 6" wheels are adequate width and there should not be any significant interference. Also this size has the same revs/mile as the OEM tires so your speedo and odo accuracy will not be upset.

            Re: V-Rated Tires

Pirelli offers the P4000 Super Touring in 215/75R-15 that's V-rated. Specs are at: http://pirelli.pearlcomm.com/pneumatici/index.htm

I used the Michleans also, but turned the whitewalls inside and blacked them out. Look good on repo bolt-ons, ride and handling are excellent. 'Bout $65 ea.

                Re: Tires

Sorry to come in late but I have to recommend Goodyear Eagle GA Touring. After seeing them on Dave Walters' white L-88 coupe a couple of years ago, I decided they would be right for my Top Flight Retired '67 convertible. I bought P215/65R15's blackwalls and mounted them on my original Kelsey Hayes bolt-ons. What an improvement from those tall 7.75 redlines. Jim #2978
