re engine color and manifold paint joe lucia i have searched for years for the perfect engine paint to use in the restoration of my s original engine it so happens that i have several painted original components that i removed from the engine within a month or so of the day that i took delivery of the car when new these have been stored boxed and in inside storage ever since so i have a good standard to compare the current paints to i have tried at leat different brands of engine paint and none match and very few even come close the closest i've come is the engine paint sold by paragon most of the paints either have too much orange or too much red the gm paint is way off far too much orange

re engine orange color jerry bramlett i'm not a top flight restorer in fact i doubt i will ever become one but i will share my experience with you in case it might help even a blind squirrel will stumble upon an acorn every now and then i could not find any brand of chevrolet orange in a spray can that matched the factory color of my old engine parts i also ordered a quart of chevrolet orange from a big paint supplier who advertised in hemmings it turned out to be more pink than orange i finally took a nice original timing chain cover to a local auto paint store and asked them to match the orange color in gloss dupont acrylic enamel i have sprayed regular automotive exterior enamel on gold oldsmobile and green buick engines in the past and i've found that it holds up to the high heat as well as anything labeled engine paint it even sticks to the exhaust manifold extremities a little better than the factory orange paint the paint store mixed a quart that matched the factory shade of orange perfectly however i do use a little flattener to make it a bit duller than full gloss
