    '66 Heater Core decision

    Hello,

I am trying to decide if I should replace my original Heater Core while the dash is out of the car. I have never had any problems with it. Is it better to leave well enough alone or do it now as sort of a pre-emptive measure. Are the new cores as good as the originals as far as quality? My car does have A/C if that factors into the project at all. I would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks,

    Ian

I have only owned 2 C2's over the years and both of their original heater cores failed suddenly. Both times I walked out in the garage to find the passenger foot well flooded with antifreeze. Not a pretty site. It would have been even worse had it failed while out on the road. If I ever acquire another C2, one of my first projects will be to replace the heater core!

      Replace it !

Safe yourself the trouble of having to take the heater core out again. Replace it now. That is what I done when I restored my '66. A peace of mind is everything.

agree with don and gary. cost of new heater core will be about half the cost of new carpet if yours and antifreeze make contact. mike

The core should be as good as, or better than original unit. Be SURE to rebuild your heater housing while you are in there. Foam seals and rubber gaskets are probably shot by now. This job requires some R7R of original rivets, but really MUST be done.

Or you could be really safe and cheap. The guy before me tapped the heater hose inlets inside the ends and plugged them woth an allen screw in each. The car was from Fla. and I guess he did not need the heater or the worries. Plus it was invisible when the hoses were attached.

Do it now. It's not that bad a job. I agree with Joe, rebuild the heater box with new seals.
