    Eastwood golden cad paint

My 82 Vette has a few gold cadmium items under the hood that are need of refurbishing. I tried Eastwood golden cad on one small piece and it does not cover very good. It comes out looking like a golden mottled snakeskin. It does not seem to cover blemishes. The Temperature was 70 degrees when I tried. It seems to me that I would be better off with a light gold paint. Is there a better product out there or am I just doing it wrong.

    Thanks guys

Best 'product' is to have the part re-plated.... There's no way a plating look-alike paint will come close enough to the appearance of real McCoy plating to fool anyone with reasonable skill and the results you report are, in my book, typical of what you get with paint vs. plate shortcut.

I agree with Jack. I have never seen a paint that did not look like paint!

Don Eastwood gold cad that I used was a four step system(4 spray cans) and the results that I got were not very good on a complete part. For touch up I don't think it will work at all. I think gold paint for touch up is a better choice but a complete replate is the only way I know to get the factory finish and then it may be hard to match as I have seen some poor replating also. Don,
I tried it on a set of seat belt retractor frames which were originally yellow cad plated with some red tones. In order to cover the mottled original zinc plating I had to put the gold base on too heavy. It it came out looking pretty good but it looks like paint and scratches like paint.

I think it would have been better to have had it replated, at least with zinc first and then a light coat of the gold base, or if there is a yellow cad plating system available.

Does anyone know if a yellow cad plating kit is available?

            Eastwood golden cad paint-Picture

            Don,

Here's a picture of the retractors with golden can paint. If I can find a yellow cad plating system, I may strip these and do it right. After I put them on the car, they got a few scratches in use within a short time.

                Jerry--

Your job turned out a lot better than mine. It must be surface prep. Mine looked like a snakeskin or alligator hyde--It just did not cover and was mottled. The good news is that it strips off easily(Not very durable like you said.) I do not have time now to get them replated so I bought some bright gold paint. It will be clean and fresh. It will not be NCRS but I can get them plated down the road. To the purist they will look yucky,

                  Don,

I wire brushed them, with a circular wire wheel and a drill in a vise, to bare metal in the areas where the original zinc plating had corroded off. Then I soaked them in Jasco Metal Etch. I had to put the base coat on a little heavy in two coats to even out the bare metal areas with the areas which still had remnants of the zinc plating.

                    Don,
I think it's probably time to contact Steve Gregori about having your items replated. I believe that he advertises in the Driveline.

                    Good luck,
                    Gene

If you have more than a few items to plate or will be doing more in the future, Caswell Plating has the solution. They have the real thing available for the hobyists. First you use their "Copy Cad" system to cad plate the item. Then you use their gold cad wash to put the iridite finish on. I have used this may times on my '69 and it is not a fake painted finish but the real thing. It works great but the initial cost is a little steep.

                        Jeff,

Thanks for the lead. I've been looking for such a plating system, and I just bought a 3 gallon setup for zinc, yellow cad and black oxide.
