    C2:67/327/300HP Cruising along at 65

coming back from Palo Alto VA to Sonora (145 mile trip), this silver late model Honda passes me on the right and pulls in front like he's trying to show me something. I follow him for a while and traffic is a little heavy so we both wind up in the right lane. As "Hotel California" on the FM hits its final guitar cresendo, I see my opening. I thought I'd show him what high speed acceleration is all about. 10 degrees on the wheel and a stomp on the gas and I'm at 85 in less then 2 seconds flying past him. It happened so fast, I didn't even get a chance to raise my middle finger.

Hoping he'd follow, I left it on for a few minutes, but I never did see him again, probably too embarassed. But, I felt like a kid again!

    Yes! Yes!

I could feel the acceleration when I read your story! It's the kid in all of us that puts the Corvette on the road again!

I love a good success story!

Re: C2:67/327/300HP And at the end of

the trip, I checked my gas mileage- 15.5 mpg - not too shabby. But I remember when it was new, I'd get 20 on a similar trip. So now, I've got something to work on.

        I'd be careful...

My 66 300 hp will not hold a candle to my son's 95 Honda Civic B16 DOHC VTEC LSD.

Sounds like it might be time for a tuneup for your 66.

            and check your transmission fluid

Only kidding Ronnie, but it was fun. I was careful to keep both hands on the wheel(since I was already in fourth). That's why I couldn't flip him off when I passed him.

Thanks George for the tuneup comment

              Jerry, Yer Gonna Haf To...

Quit geezerlatin' down the road in the fast lane when yer in yer Corvette...emboldens wannabees.

I found women in big SUVs (mostly Fords) to be the worst; always trying to challenge the Corvette. I guess because they sit up higher (a position of authority?), they thought they were faster...What the hail were they thinking?

                Geezerlatin' ? I guess that's it!

But I won't be 60 til March. I'm always surprized what my old 67 base engine, 4-speed, 3.08 rear end will do. I rememeber taking on the Twain Harte Grade in my area uphill at 100, with the top down, and a babe by my side. Also, I did 135 on an unopened highway and chickened out when the front end started floating.
That's in my younger days, I'm a lot more conservative driver now.

But, it's still fun to open it up once in a while!

                  Re: Nuclear Arms Race!

It's all about weight and Net not Gross horsepower. Your 300 horse motor makes about 255 gross horsepower and about 240 rear wheel horsepower. The Honda makes over 200 gross horsepower and weighs 1000 pounds less - it'll beat you if the driver wants to!

Young guns around here are adding NOS or turbos to their Hondas and running REAL fast in the quarter (high tens or better). When I rebuilt my last 427, I added 1/2" stroke to make a 489 and did a fair amount of internal work and with my 4.10 gears, some of these guys are still giving me a hard time! Now I'm building a 532 (4.47 bore, 4.25 stroke) It's almost like the cold war all over again!

Just be careful - don't need anyone getting hurt or any more posts about busted connecting rods.

                      Re: Nuclear Arms Race!

A good 327/300 will make about 190 RWHP. The gross rating was inflated by at least 25 HP. Net HP is probably about 225.
