C1 gas tank sending unit

The float is leaking. Has anyone ever had success in patching. Can you just buy the float. The sending unit test fine.

Locate any 50's sending unit they all use about the same float

if its just a tiny pin hole, i've had luck silver soldering. mike

Hi Mike, I was a charter member in MAC a long long time ago.

I was thinking about doing the soldering since it seems to be copper. Since this float might have gas or fumes inside it do I have to worry about it exploding when I put the heat to it. I would not even consider these pin holes, much smaller. I'm actually having trouble getting the gas out of it.

They are patched with solder. To get the gas out, open up the existing holes, or make new ones. You'll now have 1-2 more holes to patch.

There is some concern that patching with lead makes the float heavier which skews the reading. I wouldn't bother patching. My experience with pin holes leaks is not good. If the metal's so thin that pin hole leaks result, they'll be plenty more down the road.

You can buy new floats for $5. Schaefer's (sp?) sells them. Anybody who sells parts for 50s and 60s Chevy will have them.
