    C2:67 Windshield Washer Pump Update

Last week (10/02/04) I posted a message in regard to changing the bellows in my windshield washer pump. I got the bellows changed and put it back on the car with a brand new white plastic check valve setup from Corvette Central. I got the bellows pumping but no cigar. I tried priming the pump numerous times with
a catheter syringe, the fluid would not flow through the nozzles except when I put pressure on the syringe.

As JR suggested I took off the white plastic check valve and compared it to the original. The culprit was the little rubber check seals in a brand new check valve. What a piece of ####! The check seals would not seat against backflow.

Attached is a picture of the new vs original check valve. As you will note in the picture, the original check valve on the right has rubber check seals which are concave on the top and fit tightly against the housing. On the new check valve on the left, the rubber check seals are rounded on the top and stand away from the housing. And they will not push in any further to be flush to the housing (I tried).

I finally went to Kragens, and bought a replacement check valve kit just like the original. I used a little white lithium grease on the seals, and to hold the triple circle o-ring in place. Watch out when you put the valve assembly back on the pump, hold it together so that the triple o-ring doesn't fall out the bottom as you try to set the valve with the 4 screws.

Well, I got the Kragens check valve on the pump and after priming with the syringe, it works fine.

If you change the check valve on yours, test it first before putting it on the pump. If you blow into the inlet from the reservoir it should blow free. If you suck on that same inlet, it should lock up.

    Thanks JR,
