I just purchased a 1978 corvette. It has a small block 350 L-48 engine. The casting numbers on the engine block read as follows: V0727CUT 18S437500 Can anybody tell me what these numbers mean

Re: 1978 Casting Numbers

The "V0727CUT" is the engine production code. It decodes to an engine produced at the Flint, MI V-8 engine plant on the 27 of July. Judging by the VIN derivative (see below) I'd say that the year of production was 1978. The "CUT" suffix code denotes an L-48 350 with automatic transmission.
The "18S437500" is the VIN derivative. This decodes to the 37,500th 1978 model vehicle built at the St. Louis assembly plant. The last 8 characters of this coding should match the last 8 characters of your VIN number found on the driver's side windshield pillar. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
