'65 AC box - correct gloss black?

Hi again all - this time looking for answers on my AC parts...

I'm getting ready to put the evaporator "box" back on the firewall, and just want to make sure of the correct finish.

Judging manual says "gloss black". I had it painted with a gloss black and just seems awful shiney.

Of course the control arms are glossy also.

So am I OK to put it back in?

Also, what about the other trim items? (the aluminum tubing, and related are all natural unpainted aluminum), but what about the small "elbow" fitting (about 1/2" dia. and about 2" long, the clamp/strap that holds the aluminum tubing to the box, the capacitor at the motor? and the black plastic parts like the bypass hose at the fan motor or the "diagonal" black plastic sleeves around the main aluminum tubing "penetrations"?

Seems like the box could have been assembled and then painted in a factory, or were the major sheet metal parts painted black and then everything else assembled afterwards?

Any books or other resources I could look at?

Besides Nolan Adams, AIM, GM service manuals?

    Thanks and Aloha,

    Mark Morrison #22477

The "gloss black" is, IMO, the same crappy "gloss black" applied to the frame, so that within time allowed for delivery, it will become "Less Than Gloss".

Can this response be right? (that the evap. box was painted the same chassis black)

Judging manuals call the frame black a "semi-gloss"? Very few items are "gloss black" (250HP/300HP air cleaner base, control arms, etc.)

Plus, the AC stuff all came from a Harrison contract, so I would assume these were all delivered painted, and therefore probably NOT the frame black.

Anybody have their two cents to chip in?

      Thanks,

        Mark,

The box's I have or have worked on have all been gloss black. The factory underhood gloss black has never hit me as being super shiny so I have matched it in different ways. one is to put a small amount of flattening agent in your paint to tone it down a tad if spraying with a gun, another I have found if I use black ac enamel and mix it with just laquer thinner it dries very close. spray can gloss is OK as well if you like spray cans.
