    63 PARTS Available?

SO, what are my chances of finding a 63 differential, and heads for a 63 L-76?

The heads are generally available. The rear is going to take more searching...

      Depends on your pickiness

If you are actually looking for near-perfect assembly line parts with certain date codes that are being sold within a short distance of your home at rock-bottom prices, then you will be looking forever.

Check with Darrell Shepherd at 4 speeds by Darrell. He has a large inventory of differentials. I have worked with him in the past and was able to acquire an original differential with the correct ratio and date code, with just a phone call. Be prepared to pony up some $$$.

          Michael-----

The chances of finding a NOS 1963 differential unit of the correct date code range is as close to "zero" as just about anything could be. The chances of finding a pair of NOS cylinder heads of the correct date code range is about the same.

However, the chances of finding good USED, restorable pieces are VERY high. A lot of 1963 Corvettes which once were are no longer and the differential units that they "donated" to the Corvette parts world are out there. They die a harder death than the cars.

The cylinder head castings, GM casting #3782461, were also used on 1963 Chevrolet cars with 300 hp engine and are not particularly rare, at all.

I just passed up a nice pair of 461 heads complete for about $200 at a swap meet Saturday.

What were the cast dates? I have 461 heads, just dated too late.
              Where was the swap meet?

The casting date on both heads was March, the swap meet was Chickasha, Oklahoma.
It was an individual, not a business vendor.

Mike, for the heads take a look at: http://www.tracyvette.com follow the links to the vette area for heads. They have them listed by PN and year. Give them a call for a set and a rebuilt set. This will help set a price point for you.

                    Unless you are heading to

a judging meet in the next few weeks, I'd use whatever rear and heads you have right now and scour the swap meets.

461 heads are plentiful. I see them quite often in the $200 range for used and $350 machined and ready to bolt on.

The rear is a harder part to find.

Scour the Driveline and any Corvette swap meets. The Chicago Chevy Corvette Fest is coming up in November and there will be a ton (pun intended) of rear ends there. The Turkey Trot Show at Daytona is Thanksgiving and covers the infield, if you need a clue as to how big.

Check Hemmings both for ads and for dates on swap meets.
