    '66 rear-view mirror date code . . .

    Scott,

The 67 AIM or the 67 JM have the correct information for the ground strap you mention. One end attaches to the accelerator lever, and the other attaches to the same intake manifold bolt that secures the left side distributor shield support bracket. The 67 AIM, page G405 shows the tab placement under the bracket, between it and the manifold. Tom #24014

    '66 rear-view mirror date code . . .

The NCRS Judging Guide (p. 19) starts to describe 2 types of mirrors, but hick-ups to only the day/nite description. It goes on to state specifically that it should not have a date code.

Nolan Adams V.2 book (p.373) states that there was going to be a separate optional day/nite mirror in '66, and a separate back-up lites option. It goes further to state that both were planned to be offered together, as option Z-01, Comfort & Convenience Group, but GM decided to make both standard on all '66's.

The reason for all this is I have a lead on a metal "'66 mirror", but with a date code on it. Mine is black plastic, day/nite. Correct???? Incorrect????

Is there supposed to be a date code on the rear-view mirror? Is it metal? If so, please describe the codes. My car is car # ...6205. What would be the correct code?

    Thanks Everyone!

    Sincerely, Danny Bogdany 20501

      Danny,

In my '66 JG (Winter 1997), the interior rear view mirror description is found in Section 4 "Windshield Trim Area" on page 22. The JG describes two versions. The first is the chrome plated cast mirror body with a date code in the lower right hand corner of the glass. The second is the non-glare day-night version without a date code. This is the one I have in my April car. The mirror body is lightweight steel with a gray lever on the bottom that you have to turn 90 degrees for night driving. Unfortunately I see no reference to the black plastic mirror you describe, and I don't have any black plastic parts on mine.

        Re: '66 rear-view mirror date code . . .

Danny - From your description of the mirror currently in your car, I sounds like a later GM day/night mirror which is listed as the replacement for a whole suite of applications. Both the standard and day/night mirrors used in '66 were metal backed and the shorter length (the full size Chevy and Chevelle used at 10" mirroe). The day/night mirror did not have a rubber surround around the glass. Only the standard mirror glass was date coded. The sequence is as follows:month #(1-12)-DMI(manufacturer)-year#(last digit of the year),e.g. 1-DMI-6 for January, 1966. Pete

          Thanks Pete & Mark

Thanks Pete & Mark for the kind info. I looked at the mirror a little closer. It's 8 1/4" x 2 3/8", dark grey-backed, black rubber gasket holding the mirror to the back, has "GUIDE" AND "GLAREPROOF" stamped on the top of the assembly into the metal backing, and has a black lever to adjust the day & nite.

It sounds close to the correct day/nite, but it seems like the wrong type, due to the rubber gasketing.

If this were horseshoes or hand granades, it would be a ringer!! The search begins for a new mirror . . .

          Danny
