    C1 New Exhaust

The winter project this year is a new exhaust system. I have a 61 NOM driver and am considering CC complete system. the question is which do I want, round off road, or oval??? I like the sound of my original ovals but they are starting to unwrap. Are te round really loud? do I want the cross over pipe. The car is supposed to be 270 2x4. Any input is always appreciated!!!

Jim, The off road mufflers sound great. I have them on my '56 and they have just the right tone. They aren't quiet by any means, but, by the same token, aren't too loud. I used the CC total system, and, had to do a bunch of cutting and welding. Big hassle. Be sure to double check the measurements, specs, etc. But, definitely try the round, off road mufflers. I love their sound.

      I also have round

mufflers on my '55, as it was originally delivered that way. Great sound, not at all annoying when cruising along, quiet enough to purr out of the neighborhood in the morning, but really howls when I nail it.

I also have a '61 with a mildly worked engine. When it came time for a new exhaust I went with the off-road mufflers and crossover pipe. Going on eleven years and still happy with the fit and sound. Installation will take some care to eliminate all the potential noises where the pipes pass through the frame.

I've got the oval ones on my '62. They are quiet. Too quiet. If I were to do it over again, I'd go for the round/off-road ones, even though they're probably not correct.

I got mine from Allen's. Best price. Fit perfect. You will be able to get the pipes installed with the car on jackstands. You won't be happy, but you will be able to do it. You won't be able to fit them, though, so they don't hit the frame. You'll need a lift for that. I fit mine pretty good, and then drove it to a muffler place on Route 1 in Norwood. Watched the guy spend close to 2 hours fitting the system. Not a rattle 3 years later. Jeez, I hate rattles.

If you do that, don't tighten the clamps so much that the pipes can't be readjusted afterwards.

The Allen's aluminized ones still don't have even surface rust 3 years later.

Thanks to all who responded I was leaning toward round and you all have convinced me. Is the crossover pipe necessary, does it really help performance? Is the fit from the major vendors all the same (I believe one of them is the/a manufacturer)? Thanks again, gang!!! I hope to be able to be on this board daily again and not once every other week!!!
                  Cheers!!!
