    alternator removal...help

I'm trying to remove the alternator from my 67 427...I have both of the bolts out but the alternator won't come loose from the alt bracket. There is a sleeve sticking out from the back from where the nut went on the bottom bolt. It has a slot running down the length of it. This appears to be what is catching and holding the alt on the alt bracket. I removed the bracket from the engine and now need a good way to remove this sleeve without damaging it.
I've already tried putting a screwdriver down the inside to see if I can catch a lip and tap it out...no luck. Anybody ever have this sleeve in the bracket before?

Also, I'm looking for a good replacement for my alt (it's a 1100750 dated 7C17) until I can get someone to rebuild the original. John, I've looked for a rebuild at all of the places I can think of, no one seems to have one..so far.
    Thanks for the help.

    Re: alternator removal...help

just wedge a screwdriver between bottom of alt and the alt bracket(while the combo is firmly secured in a vice. then pry the alt up and away from its bracket. the sleeve is posing a friction fit between the alt and its bracket. the sleve should(but probably won't) slide fore and aft in the bracket.hold on to the alt as it'll pop loose as you seperate the two . btw, any externally regulated gm alternator from about 63 thru at least 67, will serve as a substitute till you can rebuild your 750. that is, any alt, regardless of its amp output, will do fine for a short period of time. good luck. mike

Thanks, Mike. After I've done that, I'm curious about the type of paint to use to repaint the alt bracket. It's my desire to go for a top flight with this car, so what would be correct paint for the bracket?
