    66 327 oil filter canister

    Hi All,

Any idea how to separate the long through-bolt from the oil filter canister for our 66? I hope to take them apart to clean them and then powdercoat the canister.

Is this even possible to disassemble?

If it is like my 62 there is an internal star type washer that is pushed on over the bolt. Mine was gone but I would think that once the can is off just push the bolt out and the washer will move up the bolt and off. I got a new washer at Paragon.

Most of the restored oil filter cannisters I've seen have the bolt still attached. They tape off the bolt and threads so as not to have them painted. I believe the entire bolt itself, including the head was not originally painted. If you have the cannister powder coated, be careful not to let it build up on the upper lip of the cannister, as it can make too tight of a fit when re-installing it.

The bolt is "staked" to keep the washer in place, which compresses the spring to keep the bolt head against the cannister. Just twist the washer untill it comes off and if you want, restake the bolt after installing the new washer. If you don't want to restake the bolt, which keeps it snug against the cannister during installation, hold the bolt head against the cannister to prevent oil from leaking during installation untill it begins to tighten.
