    1958 VIN Tag

Does any have a picture a 1958 Serial number plate ( VIN tag )? I am having a problem with the Motor Vehicles Department and only have one picture of an original plate. I need pictures of several different tags if possible.

    Thanks
    Jeff

    Re: 1958 VIN Tag

Let me guess: they don't believe that it wasn't attached with rivets?

I had to show Noland Adams' book to the California CHP officer who verified my numbers to convince him that phillips screws were original.

To his credit, he accepted this evidence without further hassles.

      Re: 1958 VIN Tag

I unfortunately ran into an MVD Enforcement officer who thought he was God. I showed him an article written by Noland Adams in addition to his book and several others. I was told that everyone else was incorrect and my tag was illegally attached with Philips heas screws. (He knew everything the experts knew nothing) He then removed and confiscated my tag and stated it was contraband.

I am now in the middle of legal action with the State, and my lawyer has requested as many pictures of 1958 VIN tags as I can produce.

So please send a picture if you have one.

      Thank You
      Jeff

        You don't need pictures....

Just buy a copy of the 1958-60 NCRS Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide; it's the basis for how we judge cars for factory originality. Turn to Interior, Section 12, Door Opening Area, Door Weatherstriping and read:

"Door Jamb, Hinges and Lock Pillars

The hinges are installed prior to painting and therefore the hinges and fastening screws should be painted body color. Ensure that the springs located on the top and bottom of each hinge designed to hold the door in the open position are intact. The paint on the door jambs should be unbuffed and should be checked for chips or scratches. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) serial plate for 1958 through early 1959 cars is attached with phillips screws to the left-hand door pillar, just below the upper hinge. According to an amendment to A.I.M. dated November 24th 1959, the position of the VIN plate was changed to the steering column under the hood aprroximatel 13" rearward of the steering gear housing. It is believed this change occurred about car number 1500."

Thank you for the response however, I still need pictures. In court a picture is worth a thousand words.

I have plenty of documentation to support my case (including the NCRS judging guide), and several experts have graciously offered to testify if necessary. But what my attorney has requested is more pictures of original VIN plates.

I can supply a pic of a 57 if that will help. At least it will show that it was not a one year thing.

                CLARIFICATION

The State MVD has already admitted fault since we filed legal action. They now acknowledge that their inspector has made a very big mistake. We found that the plate had been destroyed by the F*ckin inspector that removed it, in violation of state law. Now we must prove damages. (Loss in resale value due to the lack of a plate or a legal reproduction plate). The state offered to provide a legally remanufactured replacement plate to reduce their damages. The plate was a bad reproduction at best. We have declined to accept the plate because of its poor quality, It has been examined by experts who also came to the same conclusion.

I need more pictures of original plates to show some of the characteristics that are found in most original 1958 in plates.

                  Re: CLARIFICATION

There is a company called Backeast, that can make a new VIN tag for you for approximately $250, that is impossible to tell from the original. They will need a copy of the title to prove you are the owner, and an inspection form from your DMV attesting that this is the correct VIN for that car. This does not sound like it will be a problem getting this documentation from your DMV. I know cars that have been judged with his tags on them, and all passed judging without deducts.

                  Regards, John McGraw
