    blank #321 pad?

I've got a ? for you guru's. i'm selling a #321 block and i'm curious about what a blank pad is. the only number on the pad is a 7. thats it. no other numbers. i know this was a replacement block probably since its still a nice standard bore. but does this qualify as a "blank" pad? i was told by other ncrs members that it would help me sell the block if it was. i realize if it was blank it would be completely bare. if so, then was the seven stamped on there for the year notification? if any of you helpful experts could help me i would totally appreciate it. as always thanks for the great information.

Bare blocks, fitted blocks, and short blocks usually had no pad stamping whatsoever. In fact, I purchased a complete Chevrolet short block assembly in 1975 and I can assure you that the pad was totally blank. Others that I have seen were the same.

I can only assume that the "7" which is on your block was stamped at a later time, but one never knows about these things.

In any event, the value of a "blank" stamping pad for most "restorers" is that it provides a factory-machined stamp pad (i.e. correct "broach" marks) into which can be stamped any engine code and VIN derivative which the "restorer" desires. If the pad is "be-spoiled" by other markings, it may be no more desirable than a block which has complete stampings.
