    gas tank reads ull

my 57 gas guage always reads full though there may be only a few gallons
in tank. What may be the problem?
    thanks Paul

    Paul,

There is more than one possible problem. For example, float my not move up and down freely, resistor wire inside the sending unit may be "open"(broken), bad electrical connection(s) including ground, bad gauge/good sending unit, should I go on adinfinitum? I am not familiar with the 1957 system. Is there an easy way to view the sending unit while in the tank like my 1969 that is visable thru the gas filler when the cap is removed? Since I was a Q.C. lab tech where some fuel senders were made these are a few of the observed problems. If it is of the older style "float" material, the float may actually become fully fuel soaked, but that would more likely consistently read low or empty. More likely than not, a C1 expert will jump in and help out. Just my 2 cents worth.

      Paul -

A constant full reading indicates an open circuit (high resistance to ground); rather than re-typing it all, check out the "Tech Bench" column on page 64 of the current (December) issue of "Corvette Enthusiast" magazine for a complete C1 fuel gauge diagnostic article to find the problem and fix it.
