A couple weeks ago there was a discussion about using diesel engine lube oil in a gas engine. With reference to that discussion, can any of you chemists comment on the relative quality of MOBILE Delvac 1300 Super. There are no codes on the container as discussed in that thread. The only codes I could find were "API SERVICE CI-4, CH-4/SL". What does all of this mean?
John.
The only important labeling of the motor oil is the API specification. CI-4 is the latest HD diesel engine oil spec. CH-4 is the prior spec, and SL is the current API spec for spark ignition engine oil. Though I don't think brand is important, Mobil Delvac is one of the major national brands of HD diesel engine oil and is a quality product.
Anyone who wants to learn more about API specifications and labeling can visit:
www.api.org
Click on "in your garage" and go from there. Download the API specification card. There is also a section on gear oils.
