This question is posted for a friend who is restoring a 1958 corvette (who's computer is currently giving him fits). What was the crayon mark (code?) that was used to designate the color combination of Panama yellow with white coves, and where was it located? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: '58 color code crayon mark
I believe the crayon would say "yellow". It is located on the truck separator panel, trunk side, behind the passenger seat. GM only designated the body color and did not designate the cove color. Here's a pic from my '58 which appears to have been black/silver coves. Here's the link to it on the C1 regestry also

Re: '58 color code crayon mark
Ted,
I would be interested to know the serial number of your 58. My 58 was also black with silver coves and a red interior. Not many 58's were painted this way and if I remember correctly it was 199.
Please contact me via my e-mail and I'll be glad to give you the serial number of my 58.
Thanks,
JR- Top

Re: '58 color code crayon mark
why did t they recognize it Ray (black)? Was it that rare, or did they not want to listen to the people who actually had this color?- Top

Re: '58 color code crayon mark
Again the mistake many car organizations make and not just NCRS is that they believe with out documentation on paper , it didn't happen . Remember for years they didn't believe that the 54 Corvette was ever painted BLACK. I'm member #182 and have seen to many people turn away from NCRS because of that. That was the mean reason I started SACE and wrote %90 of the Articles, challenging NCRS's mine set. If any one takes the time to find and read the books called Straight Talk they would see that every thing from "Tin" back headlights to locating the original color of C1's was covered first by SACE.( which many things we covered were not Documented)
Also a side note ( SACE was never given any "credit" or it's members)- Top

Re: '58 color code crayon mark
Mine is between the center and RH hinge, so it was behind the passenger seat on the LH side. It was behind the control valves for the power top. If you look at this picture you can see the "B" and "L" by the control valves. On seeing the color, I took a quarter and scraped lightly to reveal it. You could see it faintly through the paint.
