    Rocker Molding Restoration

Is there any way to 'buff' the scratches out of the rocker moldings for a '71? If so, how would this be accomplished, aka. tools, buffer, polishing materials, etc.

    Thanks.

One could sand and buff them out but the clear anodize finish would be destroyed. The entire part would require sanding and buffing or else the hew of the metal differences would show. Once the clear anodize finish is removed the bare aluminum would require constant polishing attention. The bare aluminum can be buffed to a mirror finish but oxidation would become a problem.

Mike, My 71 moldings were the same shape. I thought about getting the replacement rocker moldings but they do not have the little front bottom "tab".So I looked for an original nos pair and found that these are almost nonexistant. I found a place called "Buff-IT" in the NCRS Driveline who said they specialized in refinishing alum. I bought a piece of 3" diameter PVC pipe to use as a shipping tube. They came back beautiful and very original looking(not over polished).I would recomend them. I'd give you their number but I don't have any reference material here. If you don't have the originals I would buy a new set of repro's.

        Bob,

Buff-It is still in business, but dba Pro-One Polishing at the same location with the same employees. I presently have my original rocker moldings there being restored by this firm, but have not received them back yet. They were due back mid-February and are overdue.

I plan to post a vendor evaluation after I receive them.
