Has anyone ever seen or used abrasive blasting equipment for hobby size. I want to blast very small metal items (for example, no bigger than brake m/c or large pulley). At this time, I don't want to invest in a compressor, blast gun, cabinet, etc. I guess I'm looking for some sort of kit with all the necessary components included, or maybe something that can be used with a pancake compressor. Remember, think small! Thanks in advance.

Re: Hobby-size abrasive blasting
I cant think of anything that would work for you on a pancake compressor.Material is what cleans things and in order to move the material you need a HIGH CFM compressor.
Good Luck and you might be better off finding a local blaster and have him blast the parts. I can tell you nothing is more frustrating then trying to blast something with a LOW CFM compressor. You spend an hour on something that should take 5 minutes.
I have a medeum sized blaster cabinet with a 15 cfm @ 90 psi compressor and was going to upgrade to a large sized blast cabinet with the vacum system,I decided to keep my medium sized cabinet and use the services of a local blaster.
I drop off a box of parts on Monday and pick them up completely clean on Friday. He charges me around $20.00 a milk crate full of parts.I love the conveance of having a blast cabinet and never would do with out one again
but its no fun when you dont have enough CFM to clean parts.- Top

Re: Hobby-size abrasive blasting
Harbor Freight and others sell somethng called a spot blaster. It includes the gun and a small hopper. The small hopper sits on top of the gun. I think you can only use glass bead with it. It should work off your pancake compressor. Just make sure you have good breathing apparatus and eye protection.- Top

Re: Hobby-size abrasive blasting
I've been thinking about getting a compressor and cabinet. Yesterday I saw an Ingersol-Rand 5HP single stage that was rated at 20 CFM at 40 and 18CFM @ 90, 60 gallon tank, for $699. The ratings were definitely higher than most 5hp compressors I've seen it the past. The pulleys looked like they drive the compressor fairly slow and the compressor unit looked a lot larger than the next unit down. Is there a benefit to going to a 2 stage for general home shop? Do you know the different nozzle sizes and need CFM? Does this sound like a good choice for a home unit?- Top

Re: Hobby-size abrasive blasting
I agree with Larry, Kevin. If want want a sand blaster, I'll give you one. You pay shipping. It would not work well with a two horsepower compressor. Needs more CFM. I don't think you will find anything satisfactoy that will work off a pancake compressor.
To make one of these things work, you're going to have to spend in the range of $500-$600 to get the CFM you need.
If you don't want to upgrade on the compressor, your best bet is to get it done commercially- Top

Thanks
Thanks for the responses. I was pretty sure what I was looking for either wouldn't work well or didn't exist. I did find something, but it looks like it might be on the small side. It is made by Paasche, who makes air brush equipment, and called an "Air Eraser". It appears that it's very similar to an air brush pen and uses special abrasives. I only cited the car parts as examples of the max size I would need. I was planning on using it for very delicate metal, but not so delicate that a liquid should only be used.- Top
