What is the correct finish for the four bolts that fasten the soft top frame to the body? I assume that there should be no overspray on them. Is this correct?

Re: 67 soft top mounting bolt finish
The bolts I have appear to be either a black oxide or a gray phosphate. (Too worn to tell the difference.) Based on the black being a more common treatment for other fasteners, I will refinish them in a black oxide if I have to guess.- Top

Re: 67 soft top mounting bolt finish
Randy/John,
If no one else happens to have one of these bolts out of the car and available for viewing, let me know and I'll remove one of mine. Just by looking down at it, I would call the plating grey, not black, but difficult to tell for sure without close inspection.

Is it all one piece with a flanged washer head, or does it have a captured free-spinning conical washer? The A.I.M. calls it out as a "screw", not a "screw asm.", which normally is the differentiator.- Top

Re: 67 soft top mounting bolt finish
John,
Looks like captured loose washer. Appears to be a conical washer but it's difficult to tell without removing it. It has a counter sunk head. I'll try to get one ont in the next hour or so.

Looks like "ELH" and the washer is loose but attached and conical.

Re: 67 soft top mounting bolt finish
Wayne,
Funny that you should mention that. My 66 is/was hardtop only but soft top was added a few years ago. There was only one correct bolt in each side to hold the tapping plate in place. There is now one correct and one Dorman bolt on each side. I see no traces of body color or primer on the bolts or mounting tho.... I'll have a closer look.

Re: 67 soft top mounting bolt finish
They installed one on each side to keep the retainer bracked from rattling. I thought that the bolt should have been there when the body was painted, but I might be wrong on that account. I have a yellow example that shows some overspray. I dont think the car had be repainted, but it may have.- Top

Wayne,
I believe that the single bolt would have been installed at the same work station as the soft top assemblies. It would make sense as materials/bolts and tools for that operation were there.
I inspected both bolt holes on one side of the car and I see maroon paint in both areas.- Top

Re: Black Phos, Bolt and Captive Washer
Michael,
Is black phos a grey plating or does it come out black? My original bolts are definitely not black, especially behing the washer, an area that was protected from the elements. More like a medium grey. I suppose that the source, or sources, could have used either plating, resulting in a mix of both colors on the cars.- Top
