    Rebound strap rivet heading?

How should I form the rivet ends that hold the rebound straps in place? I have the correct rivets and all I can find are pop rivet installation tools. There must be a more civilized way of doing it than with a hammer and punch.

    thanks Dave Christensen

Dave, having just completed this task on my 60 I highly reccomend that you find someone who will lend or rent you a "Mongoose Riveter". They are made comercially and the restorer CD shows how to build one yourself. It made the installation almost effortless and rolled the rivet shanks perfectly. I cannot imagine doing it any other way if the body is on the car. John

Dave, Contact Bill Sangrey of the MAC Chapter (bsangrey@erols.com). Bill will be happy to loan you the tool that forms the rivets. All he asks is that you cover the shipping costs (probably only $5 bucks) which is well worth it for a professional job. Mike

Dave, Just a word of caution on the rebound strap rivets. The AIM shows the installation of the rivets facing in towards each other. All observed original cars (and the accepted norm within the NCRS) have both sets of rivets installed with the head towards the rear of the car, and the crushed end towards the front of the car. Another bit of advice would be to obtain the installation tool. I did mine without the tool, and it was probably the most difficult thing I had to do in the entire restoration.

The heads of the rivets should all be to the rear OR all to the front. Original solid axle cars have been documented both ways. AVOID a symetrical orientation as illustrated in the AIM. I have a mongoose and it's the ONLY way to go.

          Dale.

Dale, I'm glad you said that as I was just getting ready to call foul on Richard's post. My 60 had all heads facing forward on the original straps. John
