    Restamped pad C-2

Is there any "easy" way to tell when a engine pad has been restamped or forged?
    Number size? Spacing? Thanks

      Mike,

What are the broach marks I hear people talking about? Are they the marks left behind from the milling process?

yes, they're secondary to the milling or broaching process that decked the raw case. they run parallel to the length of the car. they are not rotary in nature as you'd get back from the local machine shop if they were to deck your block. takes a lot of practice to differentiate real horizontal broach marks from those formed by some individuals attempting to simulate the factory variety. experienced judges can usually seperate the wannabees from flint or tonowanda real mccoys. mike

Were there any different size numbers on the C-2 or should all C-2 (67 in particular) look alike. I am looking at a 67 that is supposed to be a numbers car, but the numbers don't quite look like the ones on my top flight car and I know mine is original. The numbers are closer together and smaller. Any clue?

chris: examining pads is like examining a patients rash. neither can be done without actually examining the pad or patient.get a knowledable midyear judge in your local to go with you to exmine the block if you are interested in buying the 67. you don't mention what year your current c-2 is . mike

Re: Restamped pad C-2 - Look

I was going to pop a picture here from eBay, but I'm amazed at how cheap (or stupid) people are - $2000-$3000 on an engine or $50-$60,000 on a car and they don't even show the most important part - the stamp pad.

Anyway, I found a couple that if you look hard enough, you can see the lines everyone talks about.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a presentation by Al Grenning which included factory pad anomalies. For example, the two different kinds of factory grind-offs used to correct mistakes which eliminted the broach marks. It's not as cut and dried as many folks think once you've seen and listened to Al. The scope and analysis of his research is absolutely amazing!

Thanks for the response. Currently have a 67 BB and am looking at another to have a matched pair. I understand what you are saying about having to look at it to be sure. I'll see if I can get someone local to check it out.
