    67 Steering box

When driving, the car wants to wander, both to the left and right, not all the time, comes and goes. Is this caused by the steering gear box.

    Thanks for your help,

    Don

    Don,

Unless I am missing something there are a lot of factors that could contribute to that. Some of them are: Worn tires, alignment, shocks, bent suspension or steering components, just to name a few. I dont think we have enough information to give you good advice.

Do you have bias ply tires? If you do, they wander from side to side depending on the type and condition of the roadway. If you have radials, then as Jeff stated, there are too many possibilties with the the limited info provided.

      Regards,
      Rick

as jeff and rick noted, there are numerous possible causes. in addition, you should consider the poistraction plates. drain rear end grease , renew with pois gear oil and the gm posi addative. mike

Mine wanders like that with Bias belts on it. Don't know how we got along before Radials became popular.

My car had the exact problem you describe due to a lot of play between the center link and the pittman arm. I adjusted the large set screw per the service manual and the problem disappeared.

                  Another Item not mentioned

is the idler arm on the right side of the frame. These get worn and allow the linkage to move up and down which allows the tires to move in and out of toe-in, which really lets it wander. To check, try moving the linkage at that point up or down with a pry bar. It should only move left or right.

When adjusting the set screw on the steering box as somone suggested, be careful as people tend to over tighten and thus wear the center section of the gears out.

Still you need to give more info.

type of road, type of tires, tread condition of tires, alignment status, and so on.
