    Anyone Know This Car?

While cruising the eBay auctions, I ran across this '63 coupe that the auction claims "very possibly the best unrestored surviving split window coupe in the world".

There are a large number of pictures, and some of them reveal things that look either too clean to be in a 40,000 mile car, or looks like someone has redone them. Actually, many look like someone restored 10 or 15 years ago and they are now aging again.

Most noticable are places that are rust-pitted, but they are clean or painted.

Just curious if any NCRS member knows this car or its history, since it has an NCRS sticker on the rear window.

I dunno, that's some pretty shiny paint on those T-arms, and the exhaust looks pristine.

Exhaust is new, front to back, front sway bar looks to have been painted, steering coupler appears painted and the bolt is not black as you would expect hard to tell from pictures, but sure looks like the car has been helped along...You would have to look at it in the "real" and check the owner trail to know.

Well, for starters, the car was purchased in New London, CT. So, we are looking at someone from the NE chapter, maybe.

Yes, purchased in New London, CT and for auction in Lakeville, CT, the opposite corner up in the Lime Rock Park area. Now Lakeville has had a large classic car operation there for a long time, so it could be coincidence, but it does hint the car is a longtime Connecticut car.

And in this condition, you'd think somone would remember it or it has been squirrelled away in a garage and never let out.

Things I notices where the exhaust pipes were virtually rustless, yet the frame has evidence of rust that has been cleaned and repainted.

The underbody looks in spots like chemical cleaners have cleaned away paint, primer, or undercoating but left slightl traces in spots hard to get.

Some places on the frame look like it is rusting now, like it has had fresh bare metal exposed recently and now creating rust. So how did this get bare recently or why didn't it rust the last 40 years? CT isn't a dry state as far as humidity.

Some bare itmes show no rust while others do, like the union on the cable is bare but not rusted and yet the bare bolt adjustment is rusting.

I agree on all the weird combinations of rust and shinny metal. The front upper control arms look as if they've been apart and partially restored because the arm itself is now painted black but the shafts, washers and bolts are shinny metal and should have been black also. That would be difficult to do without disassembling. Would be nice if one of our members could look at this car.

And, the very best 63 is still resting in the suburbs of Chicago.

This garage is about 30 minutes from my home, I think I'll check it out Friday. I'll post my thoughts after I see it.

Unfortunately, it's not mine Geezer. And I'm sure I could never afford it, even if it were for sale. There's a certain Sebring silver/saddle leather Z-06 up there that is on my top five favorite list of all times.

I lived very close to where you are. I'm from Downers Grove. I well remember going to the Top's Big Boy drive-in in Wheaton (and Downers Grove) often back in the 60's. Excellent street racing and severe parties.

I may be back there within a few weeks and if so, I'll let ya know. Would like to meet you. I'm coming up to get my 63 out of storage and bring it here to Florida.

                    Re: Anyone Know This Car?

The car is very clean for an unmolested original car. I noticed the wheel openings show no signs of the factory undercoating. My 63 has undercoating in all the wheel openings with alot of overspray in other areas.

They must have had some pretty good

paint in 1963, 41 years ago. Unbelieveable! Never been repainted?

                          David,

-------His second car is the car he bought brand new, and its a black/black 66 427/390 coupe. Low miles on it as well and actually my favorite of the two, although the ZO6 is certainly more valuable...............Bill S
