    C1 steering wheel

I have an 62 red steering wheel that needs to be refinished other than that there is nothing wrong with the wheel. (no cracks, grain still there, metal in excellent condition) What was the original finish? How do you refinish the red? Who can do it?

    Thanks

The original finish is the color of the plastic. There is no paint that will really duplicate the original finish, but bc/cc would offer some level of protection from scratches and nicks.

Two stage urethane paint system known as "base coat/clear coat". Some folks have also used single stage epoxy with some success. If the wheel is just faded, the plastic can be buffed. I once resurected a 61 jewel blue wheel by buffing. However, that wheel had no "grain" to begin with, and I'm sure that if it had the buffing would have removed it. There are folks out there who rebuild wheels, as well as repo wheels on the market. If you are after "top flight" restoration of the wheel you might need to consult one of them. If it's is just a nice looking wheel you're after, one of the other methods would probably serve.

          Bill,
Chuck Pelton is selling restored C-1 steering wheels. I have not seen one myself so cannot vouch for quality but I understand that they are nice. Also I'm not sure if they have graining applied. I do not have his contact info but Chuck has been around this hobby for many years so perhaps another member could help with that. Regards Rich #2272

For those who need the extra spsce, Chuck Pelton also makes a 15" version in just about all the colors.
