I'd like the group's learned opinion of Eastwood's Heavy-Duty Anti Rust spray (Part# 16018Z) on the bare metal surfaces on my straight axle. I think it would colorize the metal slightly brownish. Is it acceptable for judging?
Thanks,
Brad
Remember the purpose of Flight Judging is to rate a car vs. standards based on how it appeared as delivered to the original owner without owner/dealer inspired additions/deletions. Next, originality points associated with each item being judged are broken into five separate axis: Finish, Date, Installation, Configuration, Completeness.
So, if a given component was known to have been originally left 'natural', you apply a protective coating and that coating is visually detectable to those judging the car; expect to surrender 20% of the available originality points associated with that component for its having a false/foreign coating that violates the Finish dimension of originality.
If the protective coating you apply is SO transparent as to be undetectable, then you'll sacrifice no points. So, if you can discrene a difference, better figure your fellow clubmembers doing judging duties will too. But, if don't mind losing a few points here/there in the interest of keeping your car looking fresh without periodic rust/scale removal maintenance, no problem--go ahead and apply the coating.
