I can't understand it!!! I just bought the pulley/fan combo 3875967AW, that both NCRS and the 67 AIM calls for, and it does not seem right (L-79 P/S,no A/C). This is NOT a deep groove pulley and is a small diameter unit. I have seen pictures of NCRS judged cars that have large deep groove pulleys. The water pump pulley is deep groove, why not the alternator?? I have to be missing something here.. HELP!!! Kurt

Re: 67 L-79 Alternator pulley problem?
Kurt-----
First of all, the AIM does NOT specify pulley GM #3875967. It specifies pulley GM #3875968. There is NO pulley ever made of GM #3875967. I realize that typographical errors can occur, but folks need to be VERY careful about this when it comes to PART NUMBERS. Incorrect part numbers cause me a LOT of wasted time, effort, and frustration. As a result of this problem happening all too frequently, one of the days I may discontinue the practice of checking these things out for anyone. I get closer to that day every time one of these "wild goose chases" occurs.
Anyway, the AIM does specify pulley GM #3875968 for the L-79 with N-40 application. However, I believe that is an incorrect inclusion in the AIM. I don't think that pulley GM #3875968 was ever used for the 1967 with N-40 application. Pulley GM #3875968 is a pulley of 2-21/32" OD. It was used for some Corvette and other Chevrolet applications, but I don't think that 1967 L-79 with N-40 was one of them. It was discontinued in April, 1967 and replaced by pulley GM #3909817, which is a pulley of similar construction, configuration, and size.
I believe that the alternator pulley used for 1967 L-79 with N-40 applications was GM #3829387. This is a machined steel pulley of 3-5/8" OD.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 L-79 Alternator pulley problem?
Joe, Sorry I did not proof the message, I ment to type 3875968AW. I could understand the AIM being wrong, what throws me is the 4th edition NCRS Judging Guide also lists this pulley/fan assy. I would think NCRS would have seen enough cars to know of the error, if it is one... NCRS says the 3909817AW is for 327/300hp w/air. I am confused??? Kurt- Top

Re: 67 L-79 Alternator pulley problem?
Kurt-----
GM #3909817 is, for all practical purposes, the same as GM #3875968. As I mentioned, it is a predecessor part number. So, likely, the 3875968 was used at the beginning of the model year for the 300 hp/AC application and the 3909817 was used later. What this all says, essentially, is that if the 3875968 was used for the L-79 with N-40 application, then the same pulley was used for 300 hp with C-60. I don't think so. The 3875968/3909817 are of the size and configuration which are commonly used with A/C and, in fact, many of the other applications for these pullies involves applications with A/C.
I feel pretty confident that the 3829387 was the pulley used for L-79 with N-40 for 1967.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 67 L-79 Alternator pulley problem?
Joe & Scott,
How does this info get to NCRS for possible revision of their Judging Guide?
I agree with what you have determined. If I were to take my car to be judged, they would be looking for the 3875968AW. I hope they take a look at this issue. I greatly appreciate the feedback..Kurt- Top

Re: 67 L-79 Alternator pulley problem?
That information gets to the NCRS judging manual review team only if someone messages the national team leader for the year involved. Contact information for that person is on the page that comes up when you click on the "contacts" button at the top of this page.
Be sure to cite the date and revision number of the judging manual you are using, and the page number of the information in question.Terry- Top
