    C1 Fan Vibration

I have a 62 327 300hp and have a rythmic vibration that varies with RPM. I can even feel it through the seat! it appears to be related to the fan assembly, because it is not there when I temporarily remove the fan belt and rev the engine. I have a 7 blade 17 1/2" fanblade- as opposed to the original 5 blade 17". Could it be an unbalanced blade or a bad thermostatic clutch and how do I check these parts? Should I replace the fan blade with the correct one? Will this affect cooling efficiency on hot days? Many thanks Alan

My fried had this same situation on an '89 mustang - the vibration was VERY pronounced. A new water pump solved the problem as the bearing in the water pump was no good.

I would remove the belt again and check the water pump. Rotate it and see in you feel any roughness. Try moving the fan blade tip in and out. If there is much movement the bearings are shot. Also the alternator will give you a vibration similar to what you are describing. I would also check the bearings in it.

If you determine that the blade is indeed the problem, I would replace it immediately. An out of balance blade is a disaster waiting to happen. You know, through the radiation, hood, or worse someone standing beside the car.
