    Real GM C-2 coil Springs???

I went back to the archives and found a thread that posted the original 63' front coils had a free length of 15-1/8" with .55" wire dia., and were available @ LIC for $150 pr.

I thought my ride height was low, and now that my coils are on the bench, the wire dia. is .557", with spring dia of 4-7/8" and free length of 14-3/4".

Surely, BOTH coils have not sagged 3/8" evenly! Do these dimensions ring a bell to any one, as grand touring springs or some other after market spring?
Any way of telling if a spring is GM or other?

    Michael,

I checked my original 63 springs and they are 4 7/8" diameter and 14 1/2" and 14 3/4" long. Can't explain why one is 1/4" longer but could be this is the spring on the passenger side as the road shoulder side can be more severe. You might consider glass beading, painting with satin clear and installing the original springs and after you finish your restoration check ride height by measuring. This may save you $150.

Tim, Yeah that's a good idea. I'll hold off on buying another set of springs right away, I got plenty of time and plenty of stuff to spend money on. The better after markets do say that the height is a little lower, but the ride quality is superior. Mine are both exactly the same length so I don't believe the are worn.

Long Island Corv. has a set of "original 63s" that measure 15.147". I like the extra height idea, but if these (mine), are like... 460 in/lb springs (?), they are probably better than LIC's "originals" as far as ride quality goes. I may just have to add a spacer to get the height up, (fender lip to tire clearance).

        Michael,

If after restoration you decide to replace the springs it's not a hard job to do. I would also suggest restoring the original rear spring so the car sits correct front and back.
