'66 Blackout on Black car

Hello,

My car was is going back to the original Tuxedo black and I was wondering if the factory would blackout black cars the same as they would other colors. For instance would the Plenum under the wipers be Tuxedo black or blackout black? Did the factory still blackout the edges of the hood?

My car also shows signs of Tuxedo Black overspray on parts of the fan shroud that really looks original and matches exactly other parts of the car that still have the original paint. I thought the shroud was not installed at the time of painting. Is it possible that this could have happened on the line during a paint repair? I don't know exactly how to approach restoring this. I don't want to destroy something that might be original but it is so hard to know for sure.

Someone else help me remember...I believe the exterior viewable body areas such as the "plenum area" under the wiper grills wher left body color on black cars. The under food area was still given the black-out paint treatment.
Ian - we're going to need a more knowledgeable critic on this one to verify if I'm remembering correctly. 'Course, you can always check your judging manual.

The answer is which process ocurred first, body color or under hood blackout? (I do not know, but the knowledge is here on this board). The cars that were not black had the same amount of body color under the hood. GM did not have two processes for this on the line. They were ALL treated equal.

"Blackout" came after the body color. (See Noland Adams book) It covered up the body overspray in areas such as under the fenders. I would believe the blackout process was much the same no matter the body color so that you wouldn't have "gloss" variations. Just my 2 cents....

You have it exactly right. The under hood, wheel well area etc blackout was done after the body had been completely painted, just before the body went into the final reflow oven. The blackout was all cars, all colors.

I guess in the back of my mind I was wondering if there was any cheating that went on at the factory when it came to black out on a black car versus say a white car. There are places on my car where what should be blackout appear to be very glossy Tuxedo Black. I suppose maybe it was hard to tell what kind of coverage you were attaining when painting black on black. It sounds like I should just apply the blackout like it would be on any other color.

There was a certain amount of "cheating" and a lot of things were left undone or not installed at all but the blackout would have been something that everyone on the line would have noticed, including inspection people nd foreman. I would have to say that it's highly unlikely that something as big and obvious as this would have happened but I suppose anythings possible.

If I had to guess, I'd say the car was repainted some time in it's life and that's where the gloss black came from in the air intake areas?
