I had mine restored by a local plater last year. The results were not as good as I wold have liked. He could not remove the scratches from the surface, and there was some pitting of the aluminum which he could not remove. He basically stripped the old finish off and put a new clear finish on. It's nice and shinny but I wouldn't call it restored.

        Re: 63 console restoration

I restored my '64 console. I first had it re-plated by Bright Metal of The Heights in Houston (owner is Gus Olavares). Gus wasn't sure the pot metal would plate well but it came out with no blems. I then used a Scotchbrite pad to rough up the chrome that was to be painted then masked it off. I used plastic 1/8" masking tape to ensure a clean line then filled in with ordinary masking tape. I primed it but for the life of me I can't remember what type of primer I used. I had some self etching primer in a rattle can but I'm not sure I used that on a chrome finish as it would likely have no effect. After priming, I painted it with rattle can vinyl dye. Used the vinyl dye for I had no idea what other red paint (brand or color) to use and this was a last minute job before heading to the Rocky Mtn. Regional. Looks great.

        Best regards,
        Charlie

Oops! Sorry, my error. Thanks for setting me straight. My limited knowledge is showing! Better go read my JG to see what there is to restore on a '63 console.

Andy is a terrific guy, and does beautiful work. Years ago, I had mine done by a company called Buff It in Hobart, Indiana. Did an excellent job. Chuck

If you like the looks of this one, email me for contact information on the person who restored it.

It's probably against policy to just come out and say it....

I can vouch for Charlie's console result. It turned out perfect. I was lucky enough to be an observer judge at the RMR and the team was pretty surprized that the console had been restored.

It looked dead-on...and the paint job looked completely original.

                      Good Luck in Waco Charlie!
