    R89S Battery Question for 1971

Judging manual indicates the battery caps are 2 caps containing caps for 3 cells each.
All references I can find indicate the R89S had 5 caps and 1 cap with an eye.
Is there any souce for the correct information.
I would like to purchase a correct battery as the one I have has died, so I am asking for a resource also.
    Thanks
    Ralph

Re: R89S Battery Question for 1971

    Ralph,
R89S, as well as R 89W and R79S & W, batteries were delivered to the PUBLIC with five caps and one cap with an eye -- as your references indicate. Those batteries INSTALLED on Corvettes were delivered to St. Louis, where the two caps as described in the judging manual were installed. We do not know what kind of caps they had for shipment to St. Louis, and since we judge the car as assembled and delivered, it doesn't matter what caps they had for shipment.
To the best of my knowledge the R89S battery is not reproduced, so your only chance of finding one is someone who has an old stock dry battery just waiting for you. The R89W is being reproduced, and works well for judging, since we do not ask for build documentation regarding the original type of battery installed. The R89W was installed as the heavy duty T60 battery option.
The two caps as described in the judging manual are also in reproduction, or were several years ago. My examination of the reproduction caps revealed no discernable differences from original.

Re: R89S Battery Question for 1971

      Ralph,
Your 71 should have the 2 vent hoses which connect to the battery caps and run through the bottom of the battery tub. The 2 caps w/ 3 cells each and the vent outlet is the correct installation as per the JG. Both the R89W and R89S should use the same battery caps however I believe only the R89W is reproduced.

Re: R89S Battery Question for 1971

Manual said both batteries had the same caps. Will the R89W caps work for the R89S?
        Thanks

Re: R89S Battery Question for 1971

Can I put the R89W in the car. I do not know if the car came with the T60 option or not. Do not have original build sheet.
          Let me know

            Thanks to all, I purchased a R89W

I hav A/C and may have the T60 option, so I ordered the real replacement.
            Thanks for the responses.

Re: R89S Battery Question for 1971

As Dave says -- same caps for either battery.

Yes either R89S (if you can find one) or R89W will fit in the space allocated for the battery on your 1971. The physical size of each of them is not that much different.
