    High altitude '61?

    Good Evening!
So, this concerns a friend's '61 fuelie, which was originally sold in Colorado (high altitude) & is now in NY (sea level). The car had a very cleanly installed third pair of tail lights, which I think we've all seen on various Corvettes, but I've always thought this to be a custom deal, by no means stock on a straight axle.

If a car is considered to be prepped for high altitude operation, would that have been done by the selling dealer or by the factory? The reason I ask is this: someone has mentioned the factory tweaked a handful of cars for hi - alt opp & marked them by adding a third pair of tail lights. I've heard of dealers tweaking fuel systems for hi - alt opp, & I've also heard of extra lighting added (i.e. Canadian opp), but this statement seems strange to me. So if anyone knows for sure, I'd be interested to hear it.

    Thanks!

Don't believe everything you've been told. The other "true" story on the added taillights is that they were a California option.

Not familiar with Canadian cars getting extra lights either. Another urban legend?

If the dealer was really sharp he might have leaned out the FI a little for "high altitude" operation. The other issues with the car fasll nicely in the same "Urban Myths" category as alligators in the NY sewers

Thanks for all the input. I had my doubts about the "rare high - altitude option" story, but it never hurts to check. (I remembered someone I used to work with telling me about a Canadian midyear that had an extra sidemarker light or something, but don't remember specifics.) As far as the '61 is concerned, we figure the dealer must have tweaked the fuel unit, if anything. The extra lights are purely custom. Anyway, I gave my friend's informer my pet alligator, & in return I got this great bridge... even swap I thought!
            Thanks,
            Rich
