Locating Trim holes

Hi everyone.I have a 1962 corvette that I did a major restoration on.Some new body panels were put on and the car was painted.The problem i'm having is that some of the holes are covered by paint and in areas where the rocker panels and the 2 side cross flags are,there are no holes in the panels.First of all,what is the best way to drill the holes without messing up the paint?And how and where do I locate in a book or ? how to measure to mark and drill the holes that are not there.I want to do it right with no mistakes.

John, I would go to the NCRS store online and purchase an Assembly Manual for your car. It should give you dimensions for locating the emblems. To help prevent damage to the paint, I would use masking tape over the hole location before that I started drilling

Can you see behind the panel to where the holes are?

As for drilling I would say for sure use a small SHARP pilot bit to get started.

I can tell you what not to do.

When I did my 66.I used a low stick masking tape and marked on the tape where I wanted to drill and placed it over the area I wanted to drill thinking I was protecting the surrounding area in case of a slip.I drilled thru the low stick tape. When I removed the tape a small portion of the paint pulled off with it. (thankfully the emblem covered the area).I think if I had not put the tape on the car and drilled thru the tape (just drilled a hole where it was needed) that the paint never would have pulled off.

I have a 62 at home in the garage right now I am building with a SR111 tube frame in it with no paint on it,but with all of the emblem holes glassed over if you need a photo of it drop me an email and Ill get one out to you.

If you can see the other side or get a bright light on one side or the other, you may be able to see the light shine thru the old hole. That is how I saw where my windshield washer nozzels were once located.
