    C2 63 ZO6?

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking at a 63 FI split window that has a big tank/cover. The engine # match (Trim Serial # to block, cast #, FI numbers, ect). Jack is mounted inside rear, no finned drums. Could the original drums been wore out and replaced with stock drums after 33K miles? No vents on backing plates. I've read the ZO6 came with PB, but the PB set up was different than other PB 63's. What is different? Can one have a big tank without the other items? Any other way to tell if car was originally Z06? Waiting for documentation and not sure if it will ever come.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Ron,

The brakes are dual-line and the master cylinder has a screw on top - yes, the brakes could have wore out, but not likely - if the car is truly a Z06, many people replaced the "finned drums" with regular drums.

What's the last 5 of your VIN - would like to see if you are in the Z06 Registry, which I have a copy of - or if you don't want to post VIN, send me your email and I can send you the Registry and you can check to see if "your Z06" is in the Registry or not

look at my website for restoration of my Z06:

one could buy a big tank, fi 63 vet without buying the suspension/brake option that would make it a ZO6. sounds like its a non-ZO6 big tank fuelie. mike

        Re: C2 63 ZO6?

        Ron,

It's not uncommon to see Z06 cars without their original brakes. Many of these cars were converted years ago to the more conventional metallic brakes, or even standard brakes, if they were driven on the street. I've had two years ago that came to me exactly that way. The Z06 brakes weren't the best for street driving.

If the car has the original 36.5 gallon fuel tank, there are many ways to tell if indeed it's original factory installed. If this car is unrestored, t should be obvious if the tank is a new installation or if it's been there for 40 years. If you get to the point where you think it's original and need more info, I'll send it and pic's to compare this car to known originals.

It was possible to purchase the 36.5 gal fuel tank without the Z06 package after a certain point in production. The original Z06 option which included N03 was divided and the N03 fuel tank became available separately. If the tank looks to be original but the car shows none of the other items that would have come with Z06, it's then more likely it was ordered as N03 only. There weren't many built this way but there are several documented. I had one, a N03 with air conditioning.

Look for the original and unique Z06 master cylinder. If it's not in place, look to see if the car originally had two brake lines going to the master cylinder instead of one. Also look at thefirst brake line junction block at the frame. An original for Z06 would have three outlets instead of thefour for conventional brakes.

There are a ton of things to look for but these are just a few to get you started. If things start to look like it is a real Z06, we'll get deeper into detail. Start with the tank itself. Look under the car at the area just ahead and above the spare tire carrier. The original nuts, or "tapping plates" should be there for the bolts that hold the gas tank cover in place.

Keep us posted, there's lots more,
        Michael

Z06 will have 7 leaf rear spring. Good info in Noland Adams book including range of serial numbers.
