    Re: true duals

All '67-'69 Camaros had a single oval transverse muffler (except those with chambered exhausts); the dual-exhaust oval transverse muffler had an inlet and an outlet on each end. '69 Z/28's built after mid-April through the end of production in November also had resonators in the exhaust pipes to reduce exhaust noise, under the rear seat area, ahead of the transverse muffler.

The chambered system was two totally separate systems; the two transverse chambered mufflers were physically clamped together as a single unit, but each only served one bank of cylinders. Early '69 Z/28's through November '68 had the chambered system as standard equipment, but it was cancelled as standard in November due to customer complaints of excessive noise tickets. The chambered system was then available as RPO NC8 until mid-May 1969, when it was cancelled entirely.

      Re: true duals

Did the single transverse muffler allow communciation between the two banks or were the banks isolated - essentially two separate mufflers in one housing? It should be easy to tell by holding your hand at the tail pipes at idle and comparing the exhaust pulses between the Z-28 and Corvette.

the extra 90 degree bends has to cause more back pressure, loss of HP, because GM says that using a straight inline muffler on the C-6s added to the HP output vs the C-5 system with the 90 degree bends.

          Re: '70 LT-1 vs. '70 Z28 Engine

I greately desired a Z-16 and pursued the only one around here for several years (66,67,68,69) until a young man killed himself while completely destroying the car.

I heard rumors of the two hundred and first Z-16, a tan convertible, for many years but never found anyone who had actually seen it until now.

Thank you for confirming it's existance.

Duke, I dunno - the exhaust system on my Z/28 is the only part on the car that isn't original; has a stainless Flowmaster system with the mufflers under the rear seat area where the factory resonators were, and no transverse muffler. It'll out-live me, and I have no plans to change it.
